Kitchen Makeover

Often times, eating more healthy foods and preparing our own meals at home can be challenging if we do not plan ahead. Having an organized kitchen is an extremely important piece of the puzzle when it comes to preparing healthy meals. Living a healthier lifestyle will allow you to take care of your loved ones more easily and it can definitely help improve your mood and make caregiving a more enjoyable experience. Being prepared to face each day can reduce stress and improve your quality of life. Use the steps below to help organize your kitchen:

1. Set up your kitchen to make it easier to follow a healthy eating plan
• Take inventory of what you currently have in your kitchen
• Get rid of foods that do not fit with the healthy changes you are making
• Put things you use most often in easy to reach places
• Purchase appropriate size containers to store your items
• Keep healthy snacks on hand for a grab and go lifestyle
• Clean as you go to keep everything organized

2. Organize your refrigerator
• Put temperature stable items (dressings, juices, condiments) in the door compartments
• Keep dairy and meat products out of the door, so they are in the coldest part of the refrigerator
• Check the temperature, it should remain below 40 degrees Fahrenheit at all times to prevent foodborne illness

3. Organize your pantry
• It will be more easy to identify products that you have on hand
• Store like items the same area

4. Keep counter areas clean and uncluttered
• You will feel more ready to make healthy meals if you see a clean, organized space.
• Keep appliances and knives tucked away in cabinets if possible
• Have a designated space for the mail, magazines, and cookbooks so they do not end up on the kitchen counter
